Xenogears is about a guy named Fei, he lost his memory when he was young and someone brought him to a village called "Lahan". The game starts out with Fei painting, then after doing some stuff, you are asked to visit someone named Citan, after going up a mountain and visiting his houseand eating and stuff, Fei plays some music on some kind of music box like thing, than, when he is returning home, some big robots(Gears) fly up and towards Lahan, then Citan follows him and when they get to the village, someone in one of the gears is killed, so Fei gets in the gear to fight the other gear that is still attacking the village(The Gear is weltall, find out info on the gears here). Fei's friend is killed so he destroys the Gear. Now he sets off on his adventure because he is banished from the destroyed Lahan. Almost every boss in the game is either really big, or another gear to fight, every one of your characters that you get on your team has a gear to fight with except one, Pikachu, she just gets really big.
